Welcome to the Thomas Jefferson University Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Fellowship Training Program

I am delighted to learn of your interest in the Fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University.

Our fellowship started in 1977 and the most recent renewal of our longstanding full accreditation by the ACGME was February 2011. Our program is affiliated with Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, one of the oldest and largest medical schools in the country and an institution rich with medical history.

Our primary goal is to develop independent practitioners of child and adolescent psychiatry. Fellows work with patients in a wide range of diagnostic entities, utilize and learn the gamut of therapeutic options in child and adolescent psychiatry, and develop competency in the evaluation and management of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric disorders in all age ranges. Fellows are also actively involved in teaching, and there are opportunities for research. Those who have completed our program obtain careers in both academic and clinical environments.

Core faculty members include:

James Luebbert, MD  (Training Director)

Fayez El-Gabalawi, MD (Associate Training Director)

Zachariah Pranckun, DO (Assistant Training Director)

Karin Borgmann-Winter, MD (Associate Professor)

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program

A little bit about me: I graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1985, and completed my general psychiatry residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, followed by my child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship also at Hahnemann. I began my academic career at Hahnemann University College of Medicine as Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Service in 1990, transferring to Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute in 1996 as the Director of its combined Child and Adolescent Inpatient Services within the Department of Psychiatry – later on, this became Drexel University College of Medicine.

I left inpatient work in 1999 to become Associate Medical Director for Children’s Services at Community Behavioral Health (CBH), the nonprofit MCO for mental health Medicaid services within Philadelphia. In 2002, I assumed the position of Medical Director for Wordsworth Human Services, a human services agency providing a wide range of special education, foster care, and a broad continuum of clinical services within the Philadelphia region. I became Division Director and Director of Fellowship Training of the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry within Jefferson’s Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior in 2007, while remaining Medical Director at Wordsworth until 2012.

While working at Jefferson, in 2012 I began working two days per week at Northeast Treatment Centers (NET), and I am now the Medical Director there. NET Centers is a community service agency that provides a broad spectrum of clinical and foster care services to poor and disadvantaged youth and their families within Philadelphia. I have also served as President of the Regional Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey, an affiliate of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

What does this mean for you as a prospective fellow? I offer a breadth of clinical, academic, and administrative experience that ensures your fellowship training experience has the highest clinical relevance and academic excellence. Our division faculty and leadership stand committed to see that all of our fellows are expertly trained and fully supported in pursuing their unique career goals, and to prepare them for a successful careers as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists.
