Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools such as ChatGPT are important resources in your field of study. Accordingly, you are permitted to use such tools in this program for some purposes, described below, and not for others. You remain responsible for all content you submit for evaluation and for appropriate citations of the source of information.
You may use AI tools to help generate ideas and brainstorm. However, you should be aware of the potential for inaccurate information, incomplete information, biased information, and use of information by AI without authorization (plagiarism). If you include content (ideas, text, code, images) that was generated, in whole or in part, by AI tools in work submitted for evaluation in this program, you must document and credit your source.
For example, text generated using ChatGPT-4 should include a citation such as: “ChatGPT-4. (YYYY, Month DD of query). ‘Text of your query.’ Generated using OpenAI." Link here. Material generated using other tools should be cited accordingly.
The use of generative AI tools is permitted in this program for the following activities:
- Brainstorming ideas
- Finding information on a topic
- Drafting an outline to organize your thoughts
- Checking grammar and style
The use of generative AI tools is not permitted in this program for the following activities:
- Writing a draft of a work
- Writing entire sentences, paragraphs or papers to complete class assignments
- Creating art or designs to submitted
Exceptions may be allowed for artistic statements on AI that integrate it into the submission at the discretion of the editorial board; please contact Kirsten Bowen, Humanities Program Coordinator, if you plan to submit a piece that integrates AI to initiate a review process.
Any assignment that is found to have used generative AI tools in unauthorized ways will not be accepted, and you will be barred from future submission. When in doubt about permitted usage, please ask for clarification.
