Weekly Structure
- Quality Assurance (QA) Rounds: Every Monday, fellows participate in QA sessions with faculty and residents, reviewing real cases to refine both image acquisition and interpretation skills.
- Didactics: Weekly educational sessions include journal clubs, core lectures, and our Educator of the Month series featuring guest faculty and national experts.
- Dedicated Scanning: Fellows have one dedicated scan shift per week, with opportunities to scan independently and alongside ultrasound faculty.
Research & Scholarship
Each fellow undertakes at least one scholarly project during the year, with mentorship and support from faculty. Fellows are evaluated quarterly to ensure progress and success in academic and clinical goals.
Curriculum
By the end of the fellowship, each fellow will:
- Complete at least 1,000 ultrasound scans, meeting EUFAC requirements.
- Be well-prepared for post-fellowship certifications, including the Focused Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Ultrasound.
- Graduate ready to lead in ultrasound education, administration, and clinical practice in both academic and community settings.
Unique Opportunities
The fellowship experience at Thomas Jefferson University goes beyond the core criteria:
Medical Education
Procedural Ultrasound
Collaborate with specialized teams performing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
Global Health Education
Past fellows have worked in Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Chile, and Guyana, contributing to ultrasound education and capacity building in resource-limited settings.
Humanitarian Work
Volunteer at the Chinatown Clinic, providing free POCUS services to underserved populations in Philadelphia.
Cross Discipline Collaboration
In 2018, we joined forced with internal medicine to launch an IM POCUS Fellowship. This parternship, helps to reinforce education for both disciplines through joint quality assurance rounds, journal clubs and workshops.
Health Design Lab Collaboration
Partner with Jefferson’s Health Design Lab, a cutting-edge maker space, to develop innovative 3D-printed training models and integrate design principles into ultrasound education.
