The Division of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) at Thomas Jefferson University is a nationally recognized leader in ultrasound education, clinical innovation, and research.

Our team is dedicated to advancing the use of bedside ultrasound to improve patient care, empower learners, and drive discovery. We provide ultrasound training for medical students, residents, and fellows, and collaborate across specialties to expand the reach and impact of POCUS.

Our division includes a dedicated team of fellowship trained and Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (AEMUS) certified faculty with diverse expertise in clinical ultrasound, medical education, global health, and innovation. Together, we lead local and national educational initiatives, develop cutting-edge training models, and integrate ultrasound into critical care, procedural guidance, and diagnostic workflows.

Through our commitment to excellence, we aim to shape the future of emergency ultrasound and ensure that clinicians are equipped with the tools and knowledge to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

Our Mission

To empower health care providers to a new standard of quality and safety in patient care through an ongoing commitment to education, research, administration, and innovation in point of care ultrasound.

Our Divison

Our one-year POCUS Fellowship offers advanced training in ultrasound applications, education, and research. Fellows gain hands-on experience in a high-volume academic emergency department, participate in national conferences, and contribute to scholarly work. The program is designed to develop future leaders in emergency ultrasound.

We are deeply committed to cultivating ultrasound proficiency among both residents and medical students through a structured, hands-on, and longitudinal approach.

Resident Rotation

All emergency medicine residents begin their ultrasound training with a focused three-week rotation, during which they learn the fundamentals and core POCUS modalities. This immersive experience includes bedside scanning, didactic sessions, and supervised practice. Education continues throughout residency with integrated scanning shifts, advanced workshops, and ongoing mentorship.

Medical Student Rotation

Fourth-year medical students can participate in a dedicated ultrasound elective, gaining early exposure to POCUS principles and clinical applications.

Asynchronous Learning

Both resident and medical student learners are supported by a robust asynchronous curriculum delivered through Canvas, allowing for flexible, self-paced learning.

Quality Assurance Rounds

Every Monday, learners join POCUS faculty and fellows for QA rounds, where they review and discuss ultrasound images. These sessions reinforce image interpretation skills and deepen understanding through real-case analysis and feedback.

Courses & Workshops

We provide education throughout the year to a range of learner and specialtys.

Our division is actively engaged in cutting-edge research to expand the evidence base for POCUS. Current projects explore novel applications, quality assurance, and the impact of ultrasound on clinical outcomes. We collaborate across departments and institutions to drive innovation and publish impactful findings.

POCUS is a cornerstone of emergency care at Jefferson. Our division works closely with faculty and staff to integrate ultrasound into clinical workflows, develop protocols, and ensure high-quality imaging and interpretation. We support continuous quality improvement and credentialing efforts to maintain excellence in patient care.
