Application Process
Information for Applicants
We review approximately 600 fellowship applications each year. From those applicants, we select approximately 60 candidates for interviews. The interviews are conducted virtually on selected dates in September and October. We have slots for 6 incoming fellows per year.
Additional Information on Application Requirements
- The Jefferson Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program uses the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS) and participates in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP).
- Applicants are required to submit a completed application, including a personal statement and three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from their residency program director
- The Department of Medical Oncology does sponsor applicants on a J1 or H1B Visa. Applicants must have current ECFMG Certification.
Interview season timeline:
- Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through August 2025
- Interviews will be virtual and will take place on selected dates in September and October
- All applicants who are not selected for an interview will be notified by mid-September
- As per the NRMP, the rank order list submission deadline is the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving
- As per the NRMP, Match Day is December 3, 2025
Policy Statement for Applicants - Eligibility
To be eligible for a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or a college of osteopathic medicine that is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and successfully completed an accredited three-year internal medicine residency program or two years of an accredited internal medicine residency training program with the intention to participate in the ABIM Research Pathway will have ("short track") prior to the date on which his/her fellowship would begin.
- If applicants are graduates of a program outside of North America, they must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction
- Be a graduate of a medical school outside the United States and have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school

While we preferentially consider applications from those who signal our program, we also review and may extend interviews to applicants who do not signal us.
Although we do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement, our program is highly competitive. The average score of our applicants is typically 230 for USMLE Steps 1 and 2.
