Women in Orthopaedics
Orthopaedics is an exciting and fulfilling surgical specialty that allows physicians to improve the lives of patients of all ages, activity levels, and backgrounds. However, recent numbers show only 14 percent of orthopaedic residents are women, the least of any residency track, and a mere five percent of practicing orthopaedic attendings are women.
Filling the Pipeline
Jefferson’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is committed to increasing the number of women in orthopaedics. Our faculty and residents participate in initiatives for high school and college students through the Perry Initiative, in mentoring college and medical students through the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, and in biannual Women in Ortho events with student members of the medical school’s DePalma Orthopaedic Society. Additionally, the department sponsors twice-yearly Women in Ortho get-togethers for women residents, fellows, and faculty.
We are happy to say the number of women choosing orthopaedics is rising. Our program is proud to foster an unbiased and equitable training environment for all residents and fellows, male or female, and regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of identity.
Orthopaedics is a varied and fulfilling field. Thomas Jefferson University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, in partnership with the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center, Shriners Children's Hospital, and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, delivers world-class training.
Our residency offers:
- Built-in exposure to world leaders in all nine major orthopaedic subspecialties (Spine, Arthroplasty, Shoulder and Elbow, Hand, Foot and Ankle, Sports, Orthopaedic Oncology, Orthopaedic Trauma, and Pediatric Orthopaedics).
- Early surgical experience and ample operative volumes.
- Research infrastructure, including IRB support, departmental statistician, and professional research staff, to facilitate efficient and meaningful resident research.
