Pathology Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the Jefferson Pathology Residency Program! We are excited to get to know you, and hope that the website helps you learn a little more about us. On our Current Residents page, you can learn more about the current trainees, and be sure to check out Our Mission page with our “Day in the Life” videos.

Our residency program utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) along with the Thalamus Interview Scheduler. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is used to rank and match. Please check with your medical school if you have any questions on how to use these services. No applications will be considered outside these systems.

Please note: We have completed our 2023 - 2024 interview season.

When the next interview season opens, we require that the following be submitted through ERAS:

  • A completed ERAS application form.
  • A completed ECFMG certificate, if applicable.
  • A Medical Student Performance Evaluation (formerly known as Dean’s Letter).
  • Three additional letters of recommendation (with at least one, but preferably two, from a pathologist).
  • Medical school transcript.
  • COMLEX Step 1 (and 2, if available) scores  or USMLE transcript

Residency candidates must be graduates of approved medical schools in the U.S. or Canada, or  have graduated from a non-U.S./non-Canadian medical school and possess a completed ECFMG certificate. Satisfactory references are required. Applications are received on a rolling basis until all interview slots are filled.

The Jefferson interview consists of two sessions: a two-hour and 15 minute faculty interview and an Interactive Resident Session. Both sessions are required for the interview process to be considered complete.

The Faculty Interview Session

  • The Thalamus Itinerary Wizard, in collaboration with ERAS is used to schedule virtual interviews. Candidates receive an invitation via Thalamus to accept and choose an interview day and time slot.
  • The virtual interview session consists of a fifteen minute introduction with an Associate Program Director, followed by four 25-minute one-on-one faculty interviews, and a fifteen minute wrap-up with the Program Director.
  • An agenda with interviewer contact information and direct zoom links are sent in advance of the interview date.

The Resident Interactive Session

  • Applicants are asked to sign up for a mandatory resident interactive session.
  • The session consists of a 60-75 minute Zoom session with multiple applicants and multiple residents in a single Zoom room. This will give applicants the opportunity to meet current residents and ask questions about the training at Jefferson.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to pre-submit questions to the chief residents.
  • To be considered for a residency position, applicants must participate in a resident interactive session.
