Pathology Application Process
Thank you for your interest in the Jefferson Pathology Residency Program! We are excited to get to know you, and hope that our website helps you learn a little more about us. On our Current Residents page, you can learn more about the current trainees, and be sure to check out Our Mission page with our “Day in the Life” videos.
Our residency program utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) in conjunction with Thalamus. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is used to rank and match. Please check with your medical school if you have any questions on how to use these services. No applications will be considered outside of these systems.
To apply to our program, we require that the following be submitted through ERAS:
- A completed ERAS application form
- A completed ECFMG certificate, if applicable
Please note: If the ECFMG certificate is unavailable at the time of application, it must be uploaded to ERAS as soon as it becomes available and well in advance of the February rank order list deadline in order to be ranked. - A Medical Student Performance Evaluation (formerly known as Dean’s Letter)
- Three additional letters of recommendation (with at least one, but preferably two, from a pathologist)
- Medical school transcript
- COMLEX Step 1 (and 2, if available) scores or USMLE transcript
Residency candidates must be graduates of approved medical schools in the United States, or have graduated from a non-U.S. medical school and possess a completed ECFMG certificate. Satisfactory references are required. Applications are received and reviewed on a rolling basis until all interview slots are filled.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital does sponsor J1 and H1B Visas.
All interviews will be virtual for the 2026 Match.
The interview process consists of two sessions: the faculty interview day and the resident interactive session (RIS).
The Faculty Interview Session
- Candidates will receive an invitation through Thalamus to self-schedule their interview. The number of dates released will equal the number of candidates invited so it is recommended that you schedule as soon as possible to get your best choice of date.
- Interviews will be held either in the morning or afternoon on designated dates. Morning interviews are held from 9:00 am to 11:45 am EST. Afternoon interviews are held from 1:00 to 3:45 pm EST.
- Candidates will meet as a group for a ten minute introduction with our Associate Program Director, move on to four 25 minute one-on-one faculty interviews, and reconvene as a group for a ten minute wrap-up with our Program Director.
- An agenda with interviewer contact information and direct Zoom links are sent in advance of the interview date.
The Resident Interactive Session (RIS)
- This mandatory session offers candidates the opportunity to meet with our residents in an informal virtual group setting to ask any questions about daily life in Philadelphia, Jefferson, and residency.
- Sessions will be held on designated Fridays from noon to 1 pm EST.
- Applicants will receive an invitation through Thalamus to schedule the RIS. Details will be included on how to submit questions for the session.
- Because we consider this session to be valuable and in order for the interview process to be considered complete, candidates must participate in a resident interactive session.
If you have additional questions, please contact our Program Coordinator.
