This Endourology Society Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was established in 1996 and we have trained 24 fellows since then. This fellowship offers a 1-year clinical certificate in Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Oncology. Robotic procedures will include primarily oncology and some benign disease/ reconstruction. There is additional opportunity to pursue advanced endourologic training based on applicant preference.
Applicants must have completed an ACGME accredited urology residency and be board-eligible/board-certified at the start of the 1-year program. The applicant must also be eligible for a full Pennsylvania medical license.
The Fellow will be appointed as a clinical instructor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and will have full attending privileges. The fellow is expected to work closely with the residents and be involved in resident and medical student education. The fellow is expected to participate in weekly education conferences (Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Multidisciplinary GU Tumor Board).
Jefferson Health, is a multi-state non-profit health system whose flagship hospital is Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City, Philadelphia. Within a network of 32 hospitals throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey, Jefferson Health is home to the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, which was founded in 1824, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The fellow will work closely with Dr. Mihir Shah and Dr. Costas Lallas as well as other urologic oncology faculty in the department and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center for their robotic training. There is opportunity to work with Dr. Scott Hubosky for advanced endoscopic procedures for stone disease and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (Ureteroscopy, PCNLs).
Jefferson Health System has numerous DV5 and Xi robots as well as a single port (SP) robot, all with dual consoles. All systems are heavily utilized by the urology department. The fellowship offers a robust robotic experience with an average of 400 robotic cases performed annually of which about 100 are SP. Additionally, there is opportunity to participate in Focal Therapy cases (HIFU, Nanoknife, IRE, Cryoablation), MRI Fusion biopsies as well as HOLEP.

Fellow is expected to participate in the faculty call pool and will take attending call with the typical support of junior and chief-level residents. Non-robotic cases that need to be taken to the operating room urgently, emergently or electively may be covered by the fellow on call or based on the need on a given day. The fellow will also cover approximately one general urology clinic per week and can perform in-office procedures and book non-robotics cases to the operating room. The fellow will also be responsible for overseeing post operative patients that are admitted and coordinating care with the residents.
Throughout the 1-year clinical training program, the trainee participates in clinical research and quality improvement projects. The fellow will have opportunity to work on research projects that student research scholars, residents and faculty are involved in. The Fellow is expected to participate in research endeavors in the department, which includes writing abstracts and manuscripts, and presenting at major regional and national meetings. Funds are available to facilitate trainee travel to various academic conferences where the fellow will be presenting data.
This fellowship is a one-year program certified by the Endourological Society.
