The Medical Coding and Data Quality Certificate program at Thomas Jefferson University is a growing healthcare field that combines traditional academic coursework, state-of-the-art technology, and supervised fieldwork with expert certified medical coders. The program emphasizes ethical and regulatory policies necessary to produce accurate high-quality coding data that support the economic vitality of the US healthcare system. Students complete the program with members of an inter-professional team at the nation’s oldest and most respected freestanding academic medical center. The Coding Certificate is what you need to succeed in the Health Information field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare job opportunities will continue to soar through 2025.  

Courses for the medical coding & data quality certificate are offered 100% online in full semester or 8-week accelerated classes and are asynchronous or *synchronous. In addition to taking online courses, students will complete an online practicum experience. For the online practicum, students will use the American Health Information Management Association – Virtual Lab. AHIMA VLab™ gives students online access to realistic patient cases and hands-on experience with the leading technology used in today's healthcare environments.

*Synchronous courses meet online 6pm-9pm every other week.

Curriculum

Thomas Jefferson University’s Coding certificate uses the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Foundation's model curriculum to ensure that each candidate is prepared for the coding world. The competencies serve as a basis of curriculum development and learning objectives for only the highest echelon of academic programs in Coding. Certificate completers will be eligible to sit for certification exams from AHIMA including Coding Certificate Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician-based (CCSP) as well as American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) examinations including Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COP), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIP).
