H-1B Employee
H-1B sponsorship provides temporary work authorization to foreign nationals hired in specialty occupations. It can be granted for a period of up to three years, initially, and a total of six years.
Sponsorship can only be requested by a hiring department, not by a prospective or current employee. If you are interested in H-1B sponsorship, please speak with your supervisor to see if your department will proceed with a sponsorship request.
H-1B status is specific to a job, a work location, and an employer. Once you are granted H-1B status, you cannot add or change work locations, employers, or jobs (including promotions) without taking the appropriate steps to avoid a violation of status. When your employment with Jefferson ends, your H-1B status is withdrawn from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Please be advised that the federal government has implemented changes to the H-1B process as of September 2025 and that additional changes are possible. For detailed information, visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website, which can be found at https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/h-1b-specialty-occupations. Employees are encouraged to contact the Office of International Services directly with questions.
