While studying at Thomas Jefferson University, residents will rotate to our affiliated hospitals and Underserved Care Track clinical sites.
This 700+ bed acute care hospital provides quaternary care for Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The majority of clinical rotations takes place at this location. Residents rotating here have the opportunity to care for patients in multiple settings, including outpatient clinics, general medicine and subspecialty wards, and medical and cardiac intensive care units. Given its location in Center City Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital serves patients from a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, which provides our residents with a diverse educational experience.
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is responsible for one of the busiest clinical services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, admitting patients from Jefferson Family Medicine Associates (the Department’s practice) as well as from several family physicians’ offices in the community. Inpatient census averages 18 patients per day, and there is currently no cap on the service. Patients are admitted to pediatrics, medicine and telemetry, and encompass an impressive range of diagnoses. The Family and Community Medicine hospital team is comprised of two upper year residents, two to three interns and a Family Medicine attending physician. Overnight call and night float systems for residents are in place to insure 24 hour/7 day a week in-hospital coverage of the service. Teaching rounds take place every day for approximately two hours and are supplemented by more informal afternoon lectures given by the senior residents. Jefferson OB/GYN interns and fourth year medical students also rotate on the Family Medicine service, as do students, residents and faculty from the Department of Pharmacy. A case manager, specifically assigned to the Family Medicine team, attends daily rounds and is an essential part of the in and post-hospital care of our patients. This past year, Jefferson Family Medicine Associates admitted more than 800 patients to its service and rendered over 300 consultations. This large number of consultations reflects the respect given to the clinical expertise of the department within the Jefferson community.
This 200+ bed hospital, located in the heart of South Philadelphia, serves a diverse population that includes a large Italian-American community and a growing number of Southeast Asian immigrants. Interns spend three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital. This ICU experience more closely mirrors the type of community hospital sites where family physicians manage patients in intensive care.
The Department's long-standing collaborative relationship with St. Christophers, which serves a large spanish-speaking population in Northeast Philadelphia, and their clinical experience at St. Chris, helps to complement the training our residents receive in emergency medicine and pediatrics. Residents in their third year of training will rotate for two weeks at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is a 195 bed pediatric hospital located in Wilmington Delaware. Family Medicine residences in their first and second year of training rotate at duPont to provide competency in inpatient pediatrics. Second year residents will rotate for four weeks in duPont's Emergency Medicine Department. First year residents rotate for six weeks as part of duPont's Inpatient Hospital Service team, and will also spend two weeks rotating through duPont's Emergency Medicine Department as well.
Serving a portion of continuity care office hours at Steven Klein Wellness Center (SKWC), a newly-designated federally-qualified health center (FQHC). The Klein Wellness Center features a co-located YMCA, pharmacy, legal services through a medical-legal partnership, behavioral health consults, a Psychiatric nurse practitioner, community meeting and education rooms, physical therapy, mental health services, dental services, pantry and laundry, etc. Some new additions over the past year include a comprehensive OB program with a prenatal nurse coordinator, suboxone program and LARC services under RHEDI.
Steven Klein Wellness Center has been designated as part of the Community Health Center (CHC) Track. SKWC CHC residents will have one session of continuity office hours per week at the site.
The rotation at the Mazzoni Center is a unique experience afforded to the residents of the Jefferson Family Medicine program. The medical clinic is located less than three blocks away from our main Family Medicine Center, but the patient population is distinct from that of our continuity clinic. The Mazzoni Center is an LGBT-focused clinic that is at the forefront of HIV/AIDS primary care, and contraception access. The physicians manage various aspects of HIV/AIDS care, from PrEp to HIV screenings, to new diagnoses and medication initiation. Residents also receive further training in contraception counseling and management, including LARCs at the center.
Mazzoni has been designated as part of the Community Health Center (CHC) Track. Mazzoni CHC residents will have one session of continuity office hours per week at the site.
