Program Director's Message

Emily Stewart, MD

Welcome to the Thomas Jefferson University Internal Medicine Residency website! We're excited to tell you about our educational programs.

Our goal in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is to provide superior training in Internal Medicine. It is our intent that each resident will acquire the requisite clinical skills and medical knowledge, professional attitudes and behaviors, approach to problem solving and concern for their patients that is characteristic of a great Internist.

The majority of the resident's experience will be at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. It is here that each resident has the opportunity to work with our nationally recognized faculty in the inpatient and outpatient arenas, and develop continuity care skills in the Jefferson Hospital Ambulatory Practice. Selected rotations at affiliated hospitals are designed to broaden the resident's experience beyond tertiary care. Residents have the opportunity to develop skills in research, and for those interested in research careers, elective time working with a faculty preceptor is available. As an academic program, the interns and residents not only learn but also learn to teach. Through informal discussions and a formal teaching curriculum, the residents develop proficiency as educators to further educate students or residents in Academic medicine or even their patients in clinical practice.

Whether your career goal is Academic Medicine or Clinical Practice in General Internal Medicine or one of the subspecialties, you will find the training experiences and education at Thomas Jefferson University outstanding preparation for your future career. Please acquaint yourself with our programs.
