Medical Diversity Student Externship in Anesthesia

The Department of Anesthesia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital/Sidney Kimmel Medical College hosts visiting 4th year medical students for a 4-week elective in Anesthesiology. The Diversity externship will include a $2000 stipend to support transportation and living expenses. Rotations will be completed between September and November 2024 based on availability.

Program Information

The visiting diversity externship was created for 4th year medical students to have exposure to the residency experience at Thomas Jefferson University Anesthesia. The extern will rotate in major clinical sites at Jefferson, including Main OR, Labor and Delivery, Acute Pain, Interventional Pain. In addition, they will attend departmental meetings including Grand Rounds, Journal Club activities. They will also meet with Departmental Leadership to discuss career planning in anesthesiology.

Eligibility Information

Applications will be reviewed by departmental leadership. Applicants must be in the final year of medical school at the time of completion of the rotation. Strong consideration will be given to applicants with the following criteria:

  • Lived experiences overcoming hardship/low socioeconomic status
  • First generation college student
  • Rural or First Nations community member
  • Passion for work in diversity and inclusion

Students will submit an application through the VLSO portal of the AAMC: Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ (VSLO®) | Students & Residents (aamc.org). In addition, applicants will submit the following to Jaleesa Jackson, MD:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. One page personal statement describing commitment to Diversity in Anesthesia and how they meet the eligibility criteria
  3. One Letter of Recommendation
