Alternate Pathway for International Medical Graduates
Our four-year Alternate Pathway is designed for international medical graduates (IMGs) who are board-certified in radiology in their home country. This program provides IMGs the opportunity to complete four years of radiology training at our institution within an eight-year timeframe, thereby becoming eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Achieving ABR certification enables IMGs to practice radiology in the United States, if they also meet the additional requirements related to medical licensing and immigration status.
International Medical Graduates Alternate Pathway Information
At Jefferson Health, the Alternate Pathway can be pursued in the following subspecialties: Neuroradiology, Abdominal Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Pediatric Imaging, and Breast Imaging. Up to 12 months of research conducted within our department may also count toward the four-year requirement.
Please note that training positions are limited, and the pathway offered may differ from your initial preference. Once accepted, trainees are expected to complete the designated pathway.
After a candidate has been at Jefferson Health for one year in the Alternate Pathway program/Fellowship they are eligible to become a faculty member at that point if they would like to explore that opportunity with Radiology Departmental support.
Requirements to practice as a radiologist in the United States vary by state. In Pennsylvania, applicants must complete at least two years of ACGME-accredited training to be eligible for an unrestricted medical license. We will make every effort to provide two ACGME-accredited fellowship opportunities within the four-year track; however, due to the competitive nature of our programs, only one may be available.
If you choose not to pursue—or are not offered—the four-year pathway and instead complete only one or two years of radiology subspecialty training with us, please be aware that the four-year pathway may not be offered later. In addition, continuation in the four-year Alternate Pathway is contingent upon consistently meeting the department’s performance expectations.
