The MSK division is actively involved in research and represented in committees of the national and international societies and their annual conferences. Due to the high clinical MRI volume and exposure to professional teams, sports-related injuries are one of the main research areas with projects covering both the upper and lower extremities.
The research spectrum is broad and includes shoulder and elbow injuries in throwing athletes, athletic pubalgia/sports-related core, hip injuries, wrist hand and knee injuries.
Another research focus is the combined diagnostic imaging approach with both MSK ultrasound and MRI, as well as ultrasound-guided interventions for treatment of sports injuries and functional/dynamic MSK ultrasound. Aside from sports injuries, our division has a high MSK tumor volume and advanced imaging techniques for primary MSK tumors are being studied and clinically used in our division. In collaboration with the Spine Surgery Division, MRI findings as prognostic predictors prior to spine interventions are studied. Interventional projects include new ablation techniques for primary bone tumors, as well as imaging and treatment (subchondroplasty) of subchondral insufficiency fractures.
We work closely together with our colleagues from the Orthopedic Surgery/Sports Medicine Department at Thomas Jefferson University/Rothman Orthopaedics, with Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center (formerly The Philadelphia Hand Center), Spine Surgery, Orthopedic Surgical Oncology and the Vincera Institute and other departments on various research studies. In collaboration with the US Olympic team MSK injuries specific to certain sport activities are investigated.
