Program Information
Curriculum
The Jefferson Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a rigorous and diverse curriculum aimed at giving each fellow exposure to all facets of Sports Medicine. Core clinical rotations are completed with both Primary Care Sports Medicine and Surgical Sports Medicine faculty. Fellows also rotate with radiology faculty and have access to an array of elective rotation opportunities.
Our program offers hands-on ultrasound training through lectures, clinic patients, standardized patients, and a cadaver lab. Our didactics feature a multidisciplinary curriculum that leverages our faculty’s clinical expertise with our strong relationships to the Philadelphia sports medicine community. Our fellows’ educational experience is rounded out with hands on sports coverage experience with every level of competition.
Below you will find more information on different parts of the one-year sports fellowship curriculum.
Clinical Rotations
The year is broken down into 1–2 month rotations. Our fellows rotate with Primary Care Sports Medicine and Surgical faculty at Jefferson and the Rothman Institute. The core rotations expose fellows to the full spectrum of sports medicine care including dedicated time with surgical sports medicine, upper extremity, and foot and ankle care. Our fellows also rotate with our MSK radiologists along with our pediatric sports medicine faculty at St. Christopher’s. Fellows, also, have up to 3 months of elective time where they can choose from an array of options.
Training Room
Our fellows work in different training rooms throughout the year. The High School training room serves as the fellows’ continuity training room throughout the year. Fellows work autonomously at their high school, diagnosing sports injuries and determining management plans. In addition to their high school training room, our fellows cover St. Joe’s University (DI), Jefferson University (DII), and The Philadelphia Ballet.
Sports Coverage
A strength of our fellowship program is our sports medicine coverage opportunities. Our fellows cover a myriad of sporting events from high school to professional level. Our fellows cover high school sports, all levels of collegiate sports, the Philadelphia Ballet, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Collegiate coverage includes covering football, basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and more. A unique aspect of completing fellowship in Philadelphia, our fellows also cover several mass participation events including road races and the Penn Relays.
Fellows Clinic
Our fellows have a weekly fellows continuity clinic where they see sports medicine patients precepted by our fellowship director, Dr. Skiba. This clinic facilitates independent diagnostic, management, and procedural skills for fellows. A strength of this clinical experience is an opportunity for hands-on diagnostic and procedural training using ultrasound.
Didactics
Our didactics feature a diverse lecture series paired with hands-on ultrasound experiences. Fellows participate in bi-weekly lectures given by our fellowship faculty and include lectures on every joint system, exercise physiology, sports cardiology, concussions, radiology, and surgical lectures. Our hands-on didactic experiences include standardized patients and cadavers for ultrasound training. Fellows also participate in several didactic workshops throughout the year including casting, spine boarding, and heat illness management.
Surgery
Fellows are expected to attend at least one surgery throughout the year. They are welcome to attend more surgeries.
Continuity Clinic
Each Friday afternoon, fellows will have a continuity clinic in their primary specialty.
Research
Fellows are required to participate and complete at least one scholarly project along with presenting at one National Sports Medicine Conference during their fellowship. More information is provided regarding research opportunities under Sports Fellowship Research.
