Accreditation

Jefferson is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The Midwifery Institute at Thomas Jefferson University's M.S. in Midwifery and Graduate Certificate programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), 8403 Colesville Road, Suite 1230, Silver Spring, MD 20910-6374; Tel: 240-485-1803, acme@acnm.org; www.midwife.org/acme.

The most recent program accreditation runs from July 2015 through July 2025.

Graduates are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to earn the credential CNM or CM. Completion of the program prepares graduates to work in all practice settings.

New York State Notice: Thomas Jefferson University is authorized by the state of New York to place students in New York State clinical sites through June 30, 2022. At this time, we cannot accept New York state residents.

Washington State Notice: Thomas Jefferson University is authorized by the Washington Student Achievement Council and meets the requirements and minimum educational standards established for degree-granting institutions under the Degree-Granting Institutions Act.  This authorization is subject to periodic review and authorizes Thomas Jefferson University to offer field placement components for specific degree programs.  The Council may be contacted for a list of currently authorized programs.  Authorization by the Council does not carry with it an endorsement by the Council of the institution or its programs.  Any person desiring information about the requirements of the act or the applicability of those requirements to the institution may contact the Council at P.O. Retention:

Defined as retention from the summer or fall term in the first year, to the fall term of the second year.

  • 2017 Retention - 78% 4 students were not retained for personal reasons.
  • 2015 Retention - 83% 4 students not retained for personal reasons.
  • 2014 Retention - 90% 2 students not retained for personal reasons.
  • 2013 Retention - 71% 3 students not retained for academic reasons; 4 for personal reasons.
  • 2012 Retention - 74% 2 students not retained for academic reasons; 2 for personal reasons.
  • 2011 Retention - 90% 3 students not retained for personal reasons.
Graduation: The program is a two to three year progression.  88% graduation rate for retained students first enrolling in 2013.  Of the 3 students not persisting to graduation, 1 left for personal reasons, 2 were dismissed.
Employment:
  • 2014 - 2015 graduates (n=21); 86% (n=18) employed as a midwife.  Those not employed are looking for a position (2), a fellowship (1).
  • 2013 93% of graduates employed in midwifery.  One student seeking a fellowship position.
  • 2012 100% of graduates are employed in midwifery
  • 2011 96% of graduate are employed in midwifery; 1 student not employed as a midwife is pursuing additional nursing education
