Research

Faculty at the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center engage in research covering diverse interests within the field. Fellows work together with faculty mentors in developing research projects, for eventual presentation at society meetings, and write peer-reviewed publications. There is also the opportunity to gain experience in clinical trials.

Some areas of faculty research interests include:

  • Epilepsy surgery techniques and prognostic outcomes
  • Metabolic effects of antiseizure medications
  • Mortality, injury, and other adverse effects of seizures
  • Cognitive function in epilepsy
  • Cardiac effects of epilepsy and antiseizure medications
  • Neuromodulation and its effects on memory
  • Neurostimulation treatment: outcomes, prognostic factors
  • Emerging neuroimaging techniques: applications in epilepsy, including surgical planning
  • Cognition, mood, and psychosocial factors in epilepsy
  • Functional MRI and other advanced neuroimaging techniques to evaluate epilepsy networks and cognitive function
  • Advanced neuroimaging to evaluate brainstem networks involved in SUDEP
  • Investigation of genetic susceptibility in epilepsy

More information about Jefferson's research and background about the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, including links to individual faculty research, can be found on the Eplipsy Center web page.

Recent fellow projects include:

  • Evaluation of real-world use of cenobamate
  • Long-term VNS continuation vs discontinuation
  • Responsive neurostimulation in eloquent cortex
  • Investigation of genetic generalized epilepsy
The effect of epilepsy surgery on tonic-clonic seizures
  • Long-term video-EEG monitoring and interictal epileptiform abnormalities
  • Consequences of mesial temporal sparing temporal lobe surgery
  • Antiseizure medication use and relation to SUDEP
