Clinical Electives Process

A limited number of clinical electives are available to final year medical students who are attending either LCME approved schools (U.S. and Canadian medical schools) or schools with which Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University has a formal affiliation.

To apply, you must submit:

  1. Visiting Student Application (either Domestic for US-based medical college students or International for all students from International Medical Colleges)
  2. Official Transcript
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  4. PA Criminal Background Check (must be within one year of the start of your elective)
  5. PA Child Abuse Clearance (must be within one year of the start of your elective)
  6. Proof of Health Insurance
  7. Evidence of Malpractice Insurance
  8. HIPAA Training Certificate
  9. BLS/ACLS Certificate
  10. USMLE Step 1 Test Results
  11. Proof of Mask/Respirator fit

If you are accepted into the Visiting Student program, you will be required to submit immunization and drug testing forms.


Domestic Medical Visiting Students

Students from US Medical Colleges should apply using the Domestic Medical Student Application.  No applications will be reviewed until the completed application and all supporting documents are received.  We are unable to give updates as to the status of an application.

The application deadline is six weeks prior to the start of the block.

Once an offer of acceptance is made, students must confirm their attendance in 14 days or the offer is recinded.

Students interested in electives in the following departments should contact them before completing the application process.  Students may receive confirmation of spots available, but must submit a completed application to the Registrar's Office prior to receiving an official offer:

Note: Students whom are held a spot by Rehab Medicine must submit a completed application within 2 weeks or the spot will be released.  Students are not officially accepted until the application is received by the Registrar's Office and an official offer letter is issued.


International Medical Students

International medical students will only be accepted from the following medical schools. All students attending an international medical school, regardless of citizenship status, is considered an international medical student. Do not apply if you are attending a school not on this list:

  • St. George's University of London
  • Cattolica Medical School in Rome (Universitá del Sacro Cuore)
  • The University of Bologna
  • KLE University India
  • West China University
  • The University of Minho, Portugal
  • Ben-Gurion
  • Technion Medical College, Israel
  • Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Available electives:
International visiting clerkships are available for international students in the following departments, on a limited first-come, first-served basis:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Internal Medicine (not available 2019-20)
  • Neurology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology (students enrolled at St. George's University, School of London will be considered as part of the Exchange Program.)
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Not all departments will have availability in any given block.
