Transfer Credit

Purpose

This policy provides guidance on the acceptance of transfer credits into a graduate degree program at Jefferson and explains the process associated with the request and transfer of credits.  

Definitions

Accreditation: Accreditation is a process of external review used by the higher education community to assure quality and spur ongoing improvement. A database of U.S. and international institution accreditations may be found at https://www.chea.org/regional-accrediting-organizations

Internal Transfer Credits- credits earned at Thomas Jefferson University in one major and/or degree level and applied to another Thomas Jefferson University degree.

Transfer Credit:  Transfer credits are credits earned at one institution and applied to another academic institution. 

Policy

The acceptance of transfer credits from an external accredited institution into a graduate degree program at Thomas Jefferson University must conform to the standards set forth by the University, College, and Program which the student seeks to transfer credits. 

Scope

This policy is applicable to students seeking entrance into a graduate degree program at Thomas Jefferson University and current students in a graduate degree program at the University.

Components

University Requirements

Transfer Credit Institutions
  • Course must be taken at an accredited institution
Course Grade
  • Courses must have a grade of B or above   
  • Grade of Pass/Fail will not be considered for transfer
Course Relevance
  • Course must be applicable to degree as determined by program’s college at Thomas Jefferson University
  • Courses not related to the major may be considered for elective courses transfer at college discretion
Credit Earned Time Period
  • To be considered for transfer, credits must have to be earned within a maximum of ten years of transfer to Thomas Jefferson University.  Some colleges may have varied guidelines, students should consult college handbook and consult with  program representatives
  • Residency Requirement (maximum credit transfer)
  • A maximum of nine credits may be transferred into a graduate program
  • Some academic programs have been granted exception to the credit transfer limit; as identified in the college handbook
Current Jefferson Students
  • Seeking to take courses outside the University must receive prior approval from the College or Program Official before taking any course for consideration of transfer credits

Course Review Process

  1. Requests for course transfer must be made at time of enrollment
  2. Student must request an Official Transcript from the institution in which the course(s) were taken and sent to Thomas Jefferson University
  3. Officials from Admissions and the College will review the course for potential transfer
  4. University Official may request the student furnish a course description and/or syllabus in order to fully understand the course content under consideration
  5. Decisions and notification of course transferability will be made prior to the student beginning their program of study
  6. In circumstances where transfer of credit is granted, only the credits will transfer; course grades do not transfer nor are they calculated into GPA at Thomas Jefferson University

College/Program Requirements

Graduate Programs may have approved exceptions to the University Transfer Policy as identified  in their College Handbook. Students should refer to their College Handbook and consult with their Program Representative for additional information.
